In 1969 my family moved from Illinois
to New Mexico. We drove through the mountains just East of Albuquerque
on Route 66 as I-40 had not yet been built there. There were many curio
shops on our way across the high desert to our future home. They had
signs along the highway advertising moccasins, Indian dolls, and rocks,
of all things! To this day, I don’t understand why someone would go to
a rock shop to buy rocks (and there are plenty of those shops!), but I
will always remember the bright yellow background with vibrant red type
stretched across the walls extending like welcoming arms from each side
of the building that housed the goods and services of Whiting
Bros. service stations and gift shops along our
journey. |
